Tips: Let's Talk about Ceilings - False Ceilings

Let's Talk about Ceilings - False Ceilings

Okay, I know what are you guys thinking - home owners like you do not need to know about the technicalities - or should you?

Why do Home Owners need to do some Homework?
I always advocate that home owners should do a little homework before approaching any Interior Designers or Contractors. Why? Simply because when you are armed with some knowledge, this allows you get to:
  • Access their competence by the way they answer your questions;
  • Let them know that that you are not someone who depends entirely on their judgement, and that you do expect a certain quality of work. They probably be more careful when they realise that you will scrutinise their quality of work closely.
Why is the Quality of Ceiling Important?
The quality of ceiling should be checked particularly when false ceilings are involved. This is because problems might surface if they are not checked throughly during installation.
What are the types of Ceiling Finishes?
The 3 main finishes for ceilings are:-
  • False Ceilings (very common and popular with home owners right now);
  • Skim Coats;
  • Moulded Plaster Decorative Fittings (used to be very popular in the past).
  • False Ceilings
For today's post, we are looking at False Ceilings. :)

How to Keep Toilet Mould Away

 How to Keep Toilet Mould Away

Toilets are the most heavily utilized place in the home - followed by bedrooms and depending on your lifestyle; living room and kitchen.
Therefore, its not surprising to find yourself faced with tile grouting, silicon lining for the shower glass panel which has turned green or even black! For us, our ceiling even showed patches of green furry mould growing at an astonishing rate.

No matter how many times the grouts and lining are breached, scrubbed and disinfected, the green, black organic fungal creatures kept coming back, as if determined to stay on for good.

Urban Living - Inspiring Interior Design

Urban Living - Inspiring Interior Design

This unique design really caught my eye. The owner has cleverly maximise the space by crafting out a small study table on top of the bed, which is pretty unusual. Did you notice the "floating" stairs on your left? With embedded lights to light up the stairway? Notice how the lighting below the bed platform creates the similar "floating" atmosphere too?
The cement walls give off an "industrial" vibes which complements the steel overhanging structure nicely. The owner has opted for earthly fabric upholstery to add some warm to the room, otherwise the effect would have been very dull and cold.

More HDB flat owners spending lavishly to create dream homes

More HDB flat owners spending lavishly to create dream homes

I just stumbled came across a news article from AsiaOne, titled "More HDB flat owners spending lavishly to create dream homes ".

So, what is this news about?
The news article details how a couple spent almost  a quarter of the SGD $600,000, which they paid for their resale Bishan flat, on the renovation and furnishing.

The Interior designers observed that although such a budget is unusual, they noticed that spending heavily on renovations is an emerging trend.

Classic Living 2012

Classic Living 2012

Furniture exhibitions are excellent places for you to source for your dream furniture. In the month of July, there are 2 furniture and furnishing exhibitions in Singapore Expo. In fact, Home Design & Decor 2012 just ended their run (30th Jun to 8 Jul) recently. However, fret not! There is another exhibition coming up. Based on my past experience, my bet is that 99% of the exhibitors for the last event will also take part in this exhibition.

Interior Design Inspiration I - designsponge.com

design sponge

Aside from SquareRooms, Home and Decor and Urban Cube magazines, where do you find inspirations for your home make-over?

For me, I like to check out condominium show flats and not forgetting, interior design-related websites for the latest trends or some quirky ideas to spruce up my home.

In fact, what I really adore about interior design-related websites is that they are always updated, no boring cutter-cookie designs and the best part? These sites are entirely absolutely F R E E ! :)

In addition, no hopping from book-stores to book-store just to purchase an interior design-related magazine, no waiting for the next magazine issue and so on..

So today, I am going to share with you one of my favorite site: designsponge.com
